2019 Brings Great Changes for Out North
The Board of Out North is excited to announce programming changes for 2019. The upcoming changes are the result of great investments of time and resources, and the talent, hard work, and vision of a core group of people who believe that it is important to advance contemporary art in Anchorage, support under-represented voices, and promote cultural dialogue. As Out North embarks on new programming, Board members are taking on additional or new roles, thus expanding capacity and strengthening the team. The Board would like to take this opportunity to thank Ryan Anderson for his commitment to Out North, his vision, and work in helping the organization get to this point. We couldn’t have done it without him! We look forward to a continuing working relationship with Ryan; after all, he is a part of the Out North family. We’re excited and supportive of Ryan’s new projects and adventures.
Out North is an experience. We create spaces and experiences for everyone through the radio airwaves, use of alternative spaces, and partnerships. Out North is turning 34 years old in May! We are known for our resiliency and ability to adapt and thrive, always pushing conventions, fighting for underrepresented voices through experimental arts and producing work that challenges viewers and nurtures a healthy society.
Out North’s commitment to amplify the alternative voice is unwavering. Over the last six years, we have worked to focus the vision of Out North and we are happy to report that it is in a great position, with dozens of volunteers, a committed board and supporters who are creating the next generation of Out North.

A few things you should know about Out North in 2019:
- Out North is making a new home in Spenard! – We'll be located right next to the Church of Love, down the street from the Writers Block and near some emerging studios and artist spaces on Spenard Rd.
- Out North is here, there, and everywhere. Our new programming model is lithe and nimble; by changing to a pop up activation model, Out North will work with partners to activate different spaces throughout town, sometimes in leading roles and sometimes in supporting roles. The idea is that Out North can work more collaboratively with others so that partners, artists and viewers all have increased opportunities to create, participate and activate.
- Out North is radio. Under our new model, KONR-LP 106.1FM - "Out North Radio" will be an anchor in Spenard, broadcasting from its new studio and also covering live events throughout town. We are expanding our new radio studio space to help create even more opportunities for our DJs and partners through podcasts capabilities.
- Out North is art. The visual arts program will be engaged in activating alternative spaces throughout Spenard and downtown, thus expanding accessibility to the arts. This model lowers our overhead and opens opportunities for new and emerging artists to show under the guidance of a curator and diversify their experience.
- Out North is performance. The theater and performance program is slowly emerging, taking our time will allow us to create strong programming-- you can't rush a good thing, but you can help shape it. We'll be reaching out to performers and visionaries as opportunities arise.
- Out North is community. Out North’s commitment to building community remains strong; we're currently working on projects with several communities to facilitate cultural events and amplify their voices.
- Out North is strong. -- We're focused on building organizational health by promoting best practices, transparency, and creating a vision for the future. The organization is taking applications for additional Board members, volunteers and programmers. Come be part of the next generation of Out North.
