Mental Health Mosaics uses art, journalism, and conversations to foster a deeper understanding of mental health and wellness through a variety of cultural and social lenses. Our goal is to destigmatize conversations around mental health and provide people with the information and inspiration to drive positive change.

Land Acknowlegement

Out North is based in Dgheyey Kaq/Dgheyaytnu, also known as Anchorage, on unceded Dena’ina Elnena, the lands of the Eklutna Dena’ina people since time immemorial. Out North and the Mosaics team recognize this project is taking place on Indigenous Lands across Alaska and Turtle Island.

We want to invite you to center and ground yourselves in the knowledge that Indigenous Peoples have stewarded these lands and cared for their communities since time immemorial and continue to do so today.

This project is a discussion of mental health. We recognize that mental health treatment as a field is also situated within ongoing colonization and has perpetuated harms against Black, Indigenous, and POC communities. We uplift and celebrate the Indigenous knowledge systems that have helped people be well on Dena’ina Lands and other Indigenous Lands. We are grateful to those who remind us that we are all on Indigenous Lands, and that this is, was, and always will be an Indigenous place.

Get Involved!

Share your story. Everyone has a story, and every story matters. Do you want to share your story about mental health? You could record a conversation between yourself and someone you know focusing on the topic. Maybe you want to do a formal interview with a journalist or share with others during a community conversation. Get in touch through the form below or by emailing Anne Hillman at anne@outnorth.org. We’ll figure out together what’s most comfortable for you and where it might fit in the podcast series or during events.

Share your knowledge. If you don’t feel comfortable being recorded or talking publicly, share knowledge that you think should be included in the podcast, ideas we should consider, or people we should connect with. Email Anne or use the form below.

Support for Mosaics

Mental Health Mosaics is brought to you by Out North in partnership with NAMI-Anchorage. Mosaics is made possible by funding from the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, the Alaska Center for Excellence in Journalism, the Rasmuson Foundation via the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the Atwood Foundation, and people like you. Support for development of the creative prompts comes from A Window Between Worlds. We sincerely thank them all for their generous support.
