OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS
We provide local artists local, regional, national, and overseas artists with gallery, screening, performance and lab space, other resources, efforts to secure critical press coverage, and freedom from commercial pressure. We are interested in supporting experimentation and risk-taking, and providing a forum for the vital exchange of ideas in a positive environment for artists and the public.
YOUNG WRITERS OUT NORTH
VSA Arts of Alaska and its Out North Theatre announces the inaugural year of YOUNG WRITERS OUT NORTH, a playwriting competition for writers aged 7-17, with a CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS.
Young writers who are residents of Alaska are invited to write a play on the theme of Out North’s 26th Season: IN THE YEAR 2026.
- Tell the story that you imagine happening to you in the year 2026.
- Who will you be in 2026?
- What will Alaska look like?
- How will the world run?
Writers are encouraged to submit plays from 10 minutes to 1 hour in length. Plays may be written for the stage, to be staged environmentally (in a place outside of the theater), or to be broadcast over the radio. Writers should root their stories in VSA Arts of Alaska’s Mission Statement:
To find and share cultural explorers whose ideas challenge and inspire; to raise up creative space where all generations gather and learn; and to champion, through the arts and humanities, people marginalized in our times.
Submissions will be judged based on the following criteria:
- Was it written solely by the young writer? (It is acceptable to write with a group of writers aged 7 - 17.)
- Does the play “play?” i.e, Can it be staged in real time, or should it be a movie script?
- How does the writer create the world of the year 2026?
- How does the play represent, engage, or challenge the Mission Statement?
Requirements:
- $10 application fee for each play submitted. Contact art@outnorth.org or call 279-8099 for scholarship information.
- Submissions are due July 15. Winners will be notified August 1. No late submissions.
- All writers involved in the creation of a script must be aged 7 – 17. While adults/teachers may instruct young writers about dramatic structure and the elements of a play, the writing itself should be completed without the help from people over 17.
- Plays must be mailed or delivered, along with a check or money order to:
VSA Alaska
3800 Debarr Road
Anchorage, Alaska 99508

Note to Non-Alaskan Performing Artists: Solo performing artists and small-scale easily-portable ensembles based outside of Alaska are invited to Out North after an Out North staff or board member has seen the artists perform live. Artists may make first contact via email, and should regularly inform ON of upcoming performances at festivals, showcase and other venues. NOTE TO DANCERS: our space is far from ideal for many dance works, but if you can perform on carpet over concrete with limited wing space, you are welcome to contact Out North. Out North may also be able to partner with Alaska Dance Theatre or other local groups or venue to produce a dance performance in a more suitable venue.
DEADLINE: Ongoing.

Submitting Proposals for the UNDER 30 SHOWCASE:
Proposals for Out North’s popular UNDER 30 performance showcase are accepted from Alaskans between the January and March prior to a run early in the following January.
UNDER 30 provides opportunities for individual or collaborating artists to create and showcase original never-before-performed work with a running time of "under 30" minutes in length. This is not a play competition or festival; live performance works in all genres and hybrids -- including multi-media and cross-disciplinary works -- are welcome. The writer/creator and any director/choreographer must be a primary performer of the work.
An artist selected for an UNDER 30 commission is not eligible for another Under 30 commission for a period of 2 years; but may be eligible for other work development funding through Out North and our partnering organizations for we strive for Under 30 to be a stepping stone to greater creativity, personal growth and societal expression.
Selected proposals receive a modest commissioning fee and performance honorarium. Additionally, Out North provides each UNDER 30 project with technical, administrative, and marketing support for a run of 6 to 11 performances.
Proposals Must Be No More Than 2 Pages, and Address the Following:
- Describe the project. What will take place? What is the duration (remember under 30!)?
- Who is involved? Artists with disabilities are especially welcome, thanks to the support of
VSA arts.
- What have you seen at ON and how has this influenced you as an artist?
- What commitments/responsibilities do you (and any project partners) have between January 1-16, 2011? A daily commitment is required from the Sat. before opening through opening for technical rehearsals in the Out North theatre.
- Attach bio or resume and contact information for each artist.
Do NOT send any slides, scripts, press kits, videos or other recordings unless requested by ON. Unsolicited materials will not be returned. Requested material can be returned if requested; this service will be at the expense of the artist, unless prior arrangement are made.
